D&C 89
Revelation through Joseph Smith, Kirtland, Ohio, February 27, 1833. History of the Church 1:327-29.

1 A Word of Wisdom, for the benefit of the council of high priests, assembled in Kirtland, and the church, and also the saints in Zion --
2 To be sent greeting; not by commandment or constraint, but by revelation and the word of wisdom, showing forth the order and will of God in the temporal salvation of all saints in the last days --
3 Given for a principle with promise, adapted to the capacity of the weak and the weakest of all saints, who are or can be called saints.

No matter where we are in our understanding of the care of our bodies, the Lord opens the door to the greatest blessing of that body in this, His compassionately kind, but truthful counsel.
But please notice the Lord's warning against the conspiring men who would bring harm to your body (and your spirit) -- obviously for their own gain, through powerful base appetite manipulation to obtain the  boundless profits made in promoting and maintaining myriads of human additions and the endless treatments for their equally uncountable consequent diseases!

4 Behold, verily, thus saith the Lord unto you: In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation --
5 That inasmuch as any man drinketh wine or strong drink among you, behold it is not good, neither meet in the sight of your Father, only in assembling yourselves together to offer up your sacraments before him.
6 And, behold, this should be wine, yea, pure wine of the grape of the vine, of your own make.
7 And, again, strong drinks are not for the belly, but for the washing of your bodies.
8 And again, tobacco is not for the body, neither for the belly, and is not good for man, but is an herb for bruises and all sick cattle, to be used with judgment and skill.
9 And again, hot drinks are not for the body or belly.

Most members of the Church are thoroughly taught and have a clear understanding of the above counsels.  But less energy or discussion is given to this following (appropriate for personal study, personal pondering and personal responsibility) "rest" of the Lord's law of health:

10 And again, verily I say unto you, all wholesome herbs God hath ordained for the constitution, nature, and use of man --
11 Every herb in the season thereof, and every fruit in the season thereof; all these to be used with prudence and thanksgiving.
12 Yea, flesh also of beasts and of the fowls of the air, I, the Lord, have ordained for the use of man with thanksgiving; nevertheless they are to be used sparingly;
13 And it is pleasing unto me that they should not be used, only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine.

14 All grain is ordained for the use of man and of beasts, to be the staff of life, not only for man but for the beasts of the field, and the fowls of heaven, and all wild animals that run or creep on the earth;
15 And these hath God made for the use of man only in times of famine and excess of hunger.
16 All grain is good for the food of man; as also the fruit of the vine; that which yieldeth fruit, whether in the ground or above the ground --
17 Nevertheless, wheat for man, and corn for the ox, and oats for the horse, and rye for the fowls and for swine, and for all beasts of the field, and barley for all useful animals, and for mild drinks, as also other grain.

Unfortunately (as it was with me before I nearly lost my own life) because we have given little personal heed to verses 10 through 17, especially verses 13 and 15 (which clearly limits animal killing and consumption to the life threatening conditions of winter, cold, famine, excess of hunger - DC 49: 21 & footnote 21a) we individually and as a group cannot and are not fully enjoying the full health and spirit promises of the Lord described below in verses 18 through 21.  So beyond accident, damage at birth  or circumstances beyond our control,  if we are not receiving these promised blessing fully (true medical statistics for us are clear that we are not), it is  because we individually have choosen to ignore this part of the law -- or it is because we have not fully questioned nor do not understand this part of it. Either way -- in not understanding, or worse, in designidly ignoring this law -- pleasing our bellies instead of pleasing our Creator -- we cannot have its complete blessings (promised in verses 18-21 below) without complete understanding and complete compliance!

You see  -- "There is a law, irrevocably decreed in heaven before the foundations of this world, upon which all blessings are predicated -- And when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated (D&C 130:20,21).

So there is no "fudging" -- there is no compromise allowable on this vitally important nourishment part of the "Word of Wisdom" either! But look (below) at the wonderful rewards obtainable (with some "patience and long suffering") if we do get it right!

18 And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones;
19 And shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures;
20 And shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint.
21 And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that the destroying angel shall pass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them. Amen.
 

The Word of Wisdom is an eternal physical law designed for facilitating the spirit!  So it requires real physical compliance to enhance or completely enable that spirit!

Their is no use of stimulants, drugs, hormones or steroids permitted here -- nor cheating the body in its nourishment program or any half understanding in its protection and care in this  principle! -- that is, if we expect to finish as Earth-experienced Honor Graduates and receive Eternity's  athletic achievement award -- with its promised "Treasures of Knowledge", "run and not be weary" and the "destroying angel passing by us" Gold!

Please do not be seduced or fooled into believing the commonly accepted concept that your body will be miraculously "Twinkled" by Christ at the Millennium. Too many in our faith, in error, believe this! -- It just will not happen! -- DC 130 20, 21 is "irrevocable" and DC 89 is also irrevocable. Unearned blessings will not magically be given out to you at the Millennium -- or any other time.  So start right now to correct any misunderstanding and change your ill made choices and behaviors and go for our most needed physical blessing now, as well as the spirit' s eternal "Gold", only given through complete understanding and complete conformance to the whole of The Word of Wisdom!

Remember that succeeding in our stewardships in this moment, and developing the joyous utility of our body for our divine spirits housed within them today, was the very purpose for which we came to Earth!
Nourish, heal and bless your body and those of your children, today! -- You must not wait another heartbeat, breath or spoonful -- or you and your children may not survive or be found as candidates for that Millennium! -- I t will not happen for us if we all do not more completely comply -- and support and encourage each other in this largest of all principle too!

Our Prophet and Brethren must, in wise discernment and careful steps, keep the missionary work expanding to all nations, while still supplying us the tools of our growth. They labor providing for you the scriptures, teaching the First Principles, themselves, through the Priesthood, Relief Society, Primary and Youth Education supports; and constructing for the Lord more Temples for your covenants of endowment and sealing; and for your personal "higher education" from the Lord Himself. And they provide for so many needy. Is that not a great enough burden and worry for them? Do we want them to hold our hands and command in every choice? In this principle alone we already have sufficient counsel and enough intelligence and volumes of information available today for you on your own to make.
Our dearest Prophets have already provided us with the righteous plan, our Lord's design and given us His perfect tools. We ought now, in grateful return,  provide for them the power of our willing spirits, healing hearts, healthy hands and Word of Wisdom strengthened souls! tlr
